Sash Windows Draught Proofing
Our draught-proofing system is specially designed for sash windows, casement windows and doors. It beats draughts, eliminates noise, moisture and dirt and will drastically improve your home’s energy efficiency. From the moment we install our draught-proofing system you’ll notice the difference and your energy bills will tumble.
Many of England’s houses have traditional timber sash windows. They’ve got a timeless appeal and we all love them, but how many have been properly maintained over the years?
More often than not they suffer from cracks and shrinkage that cause draughts and noisy rattling, and prevent them moving smoothly.
Our craftsmen can give them a full service, replace missing or damaged cords, restore worn paint and install a draught-proofing system that will make them as good as new.
Our draught proofing service entails:
Preparing the panel
First, we remove the four internal beadings which allow us to lift the lower panel. The two vertical beads are removed followed by the upper sliding panel. It helps to release any stuck panels. Once the sashes are removed we can remove the weights from the panel box and clean all spaces of any dirt. At this stage we sand the sashes, wax panel boxes from the outside and oil panel pulleys.
We route a groove along the central length on the upper panel. Inside the groove we slide brush strips which provide seal between the upper panel and the top of the box. We do the same on the lower panel, so after your window is totally secure by draught.
For re-cording we use high quality waxed cotton cords. After re-corded the weights are reinsert into the panel box.
Upper panel is reinserted connected to the upper cords and tested to ensure smooth running. Then we install the new timber beads with draught proofing strips inside. The new beads reduce noise, draught and rattle. After we install the lower sash, re-attached it to the lower cords and tested to ensure smooth running. Next install the new timber beads with draught proofing strips inserted inside. All beads look exactly the same as before but contain the discreet waterproof brushes. Afterwards we paint a bead with gloss paint which also waterproofs it. Finally a finish coat of white primer is applied to the new beads and to any bare wood. Now your window is completed draught proofed.
Balancing the sashes
It is very important because balancing decides about easy opening and closing of the windows. We weight the sashes and adjust weights so windows run smoothly.
